Vali ani Kele Ambat (Spinach & Banana ) Curry

This is a traditional konkani recipe. Mangalorean konkani prepare this with Papaya, but Tellichery side Konkanis prepare with Nendra banana. Nendra bananas are famous Kerala bananas used for chips and ripe ones used for fritters, halwa, etc.

Ingredients :

  • Vali with stem – 4 cups
  • Nendra banana (ripe ) – 1
  • Thuar dal – 1/2 cup.
  • coconut – 1/2 .
  • Red Chillies – 4 – 6 (fried with little oil )
  • Tamarind – a pea size.
  • jaggery – a marble size.
  • Onion – 1 small.(cut into small pieces )
  • Salt to taste.

For seasoning :

  • Coconut oil – 1 tbsp.
  • Shallots – 6-8. (cut into small pieces ).

Method :

  • Pressure cook dal with enough water.
  • Grind coconut, red chillies and tamarind to a fine paste.
  • Cook spinach,onion and banana in a vessel.
  • Add salt and jaggery boil again.
  • Now add ground paste and cook few more minutes.
  • Heat oil and fry shallots up to golden brown and pour over curry.
  • Served with cooked rice.
