Puli Koddel

Basically “Puli Koddel”is Udupi Brahmins Curry,but we South Kanara konkanis also prepare this in our festival feast.

 Ingredients :

  • Ash Gourd ( Winter Melon ) – 500 gms.
  • Grated coconut – 3 tbsp.
  • Red Chillies – 8.
  • Coriander seeds – 3 tsp.
  • Urad dhal – 2 tsp.
  • Bengal gram (chana) dhal – 2 tsp.
  • Black sesame seeds – 3 tsp.
  • Raw rice – 1 tsp,
  • Turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp.
  • Asfoetida – a little.
  • Tamarind – A pebble size.
  • Jaggery – 1 big lime size.
  • Salt to taste.

For Seasoning :

  • Coconut Oil – 2 tsp.
  • Mustard seeds – 1/2 tsp.
  • Curry leaves – few.

Method :

  • Cut Ash gourd into 11/2 inches pieces.
  • Fry coriander seeds,chana dhal,urad dhal,red chillies,asfoetida, turmeric powder and grated coconut in little oil one by one up to golden red colour.
  • Fry sesame seeds and rice separately.
  • Grind all this with tamarind into coarsely paste.
  • Cook ash gourd in a vessel, when it cooks well add jaggery and salt.Bring to boil.
  • Now add ground paste and cook for few more minutes.
  • Heat oil add mustard and curry leaves  pour this seasoning over the curry.
  • Serve hot with Rice.
