Chane-Ghashi

Ingredients :

  • Bengal gram – 1 cup.
  • Malbar yam ( Surnu in Konkani )100 gms .
  • Coconut – 1.
  • Red chillies – 7 – 8 ( fried in little oil ).
  • Tamarind – a pebble size.
  • Turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp.
  • Salt to taste.

For Seasoning :

  • Oil – 2 tsp.
  • Mustard – 1 /2 tsp.
  • Cumin seeds – 1/4 tsp.
  • Curry leaves – few.

Method :

  •  Soak chana for 8 to 10 hours in water.
  • Peel yam and cut into cubes.
  • Pressure cook chana and yam for 15 to 20 minutes.
  • Grind grated coconut with fried red chillies,turmeric powder and tamarind into fine paste.
  • Add ground paste to cooked chana along with salt,enough water and cook till gravy becomes thick.
  • Fry the seasoning in oil and pour over the curry.
  • Serve hot with rice.

Variation :

1 Instead of yam you can use any one of these vegetables, Tender jack , Kook (Chinese Potato ),Drum sticks, Potatoes.

2 Omit tamarind and use any one from this, Raw Mango pieces, Bimbul, Ambado (Hog plums )
