Menaskayi is a sweet ,tangy and spicy side dish served at every feast in Udupi.
Ingredients :
- Raw Mangoes – 500 gms.
- Grated coconut – 2 tbsps.
- Coriander seeds – 2 tbsps.
- Black gram Dal (Urad dal ) – 2 tbsps.
- Fenugreek seeds ( methi seeds ) – 2 tsps.
- Sesame seeds (Black thill ) – 1 tbsp.
- Ground nuts – 1 tbsp.
- Kashmiri Red chillies – 20- 22 no.
- Jaggery – 4-5 pieces.(Lemon Size )
- Salt to taste.
For seasoning :
Oil, mustard seeds,curry leaves.
Method :
- Peel mangoes and cut into pieces.
- Dry roast all ingredients from no 2 – 8.
- Dry grind into coarse powder.
- Heat oil in Kadai, add mustard when it starts to splutter add curry leaves, mangoes, ground masala, jaggery, salt and 2 cups of water.
- Cook this on a medium flame till the gravy starts to boil.
- Reduce the flame and cook for further 4 – 5 minutes till the gravy starts to thickening.
- Serve hot with rice.
Variation : Substitute mangoes with Pineapple,Capsicum, Bitter gourd.If you are making mensakayi with bitter gourd or capsicum add tamarind.
Adjust the sweetness and spice according to your taste.
