Mavina (Mango )Menaskayi

Menaskayi is a sweet ,tangy and spicy side dish served at every feast in Udupi.

Ingredients :

  1. Raw Mangoes – 500 gms.
  2. Grated coconut – 2 tbsps.
  3. Coriander seeds – 2 tbsps.
  4. Black gram Dal (Urad dal ) – 2 tbsps.
  5. Fenugreek seeds ( methi seeds ) – 2 tsps.
  6. Sesame seeds  (Black thill ) – 1 tbsp.
  7. Ground nuts  – 1 tbsp.
  8. Kashmiri Red chillies – 20- 22 no.
  9. Jaggery – 4-5 pieces.(Lemon Size )
  10.  Salt to taste.

For seasoning :

Oil, mustard seeds,curry leaves.

Method :

  1. Peel mangoes and cut into pieces.
  2. Dry roast all ingredients from no 2 – 8.
  3. Dry  grind  into coarse powder.
  4. Heat oil in Kadai, add mustard when it starts to splutter add curry leaves, mangoes, ground masala, jaggery, salt and 2 cups of water.
  5. Cook this on a medium flame till the gravy starts to boil.
  6.  Reduce the flame and cook for further  4 – 5  minutes till the gravy starts to thickening.
  7. Serve hot with rice.

Variation : Substitute mangoes with Pineapple,Capsicum, Bitter gourd.If you are making mensakayi with bitter gourd or capsicum add tamarind.

Adjust the sweetness and spice according to your taste.
