Godu Phovu (Sweetened Beaten Rice )

Sweet-Poha(-Beaten-rice,

Godu phovu  is one of the main traditional sweet dish made by most GSB communities for any special or auspicious occasions, be it  engagement, birthday , marriages or even while conveying any good news. It is also made as a Naivedyam or as a snack. This Naivedyam is mostly offered to Sravan masa’s (month) Tulasi or Chudi Pooja .

Ingredients :

  • Grated coconut – 1 cup.
  • Jaggery syrup – 3/4 cup.
  • Beaten rice – 2 cups.
  • Melted ghee – 1 tsp.
  • Cardamom – 1/2 tsp.

 Method :

  • In a kadai  heat Jaggery syrup and grated coconut on a medium flame .
  • Heat it further for 2 -3 minutes until it dries up and then turn off the heat.
  • Allow it to cool. This is the base of this dish and is called Churnu

  • When Churnu cools completely, add ghee, cardamom powder and start adding beaten rice in small amounts and mix well. Keep adding beaten rice until it is a homogeneous mixture. If the final mixture is soft add more beaten rice.
  • Godu Phovu is ready.
