Taushe God Idly ( sweet Idly of cucumber ) & cheppi Idly ( savory ) .

This is sweet Idly of cucumber and another is savory it is without jaggery . This is Mangalore Konkani dish prepare during Diwali festival on “Gopuja ” day. We prepare this and fed to cow as Prasad . Cucumber Idlys are prepared instantly and doesn’t required any fermentation .

Ingredients :

  • Raw rice – 250 gms .
  • Cucumber – 1 big .
  • Grated coconut – 1 1/2 cups .
  • Grated jaggery – 3/4 cup .
  • Salt to taste.
  • Ghee or Butter for serving.

Method :

  1. Wash and soak rice for 2 – 3 hours in water .
  2. Wash and peel the skin of cucumber and grate it .
  3. Grind rice with grated coconut in to coarsely. The consistency of the batter like rawa and do not add water while grinding .
  4. Make the ground batter into two equal parts .
  5. For one portion of the batter add half grated cucumber , grated jaggery and salt . Mix it well , this is for sweet Idly .
  6. For another portion add another half grated cucumber and salt , mix well . This is for savory Idly.
  7. Do not add any extra water. If you prefer having more sweet in idly increase the quantity of the jaggery .
  8. Add enough water in steamer or idly cooker and heat it. Grease idly molds with ghee.
  9. Pour the batter in to idly molds and steam it for 15 – 18 minutes, till done .
  10. Once the Idlys are done take it out from the steamer and rest it for 2 – 3 minutes then de- mold the Idlys .
  11. Serve the sweet Idly with ghee or Butter , serve the savory Idly with chutney .

Variation :

  1. You can prepare this idly using rice rawa instead of rice .
  2. Taushe Idly are prepared with turmeric leaves or banana leaf traditionally this adds a unique and distinct flavor to Idlys and hence taste heavenly .
