Godu Appo (sweet paniyaram)

This sweet dish is usually prepared as one of the main naivedya during Ganesh Chaturthi in Konkani households. Godu appo is to a Konkani GSB as Modak is to a Maharashtrian for Ganesh pooja. Fried in ghee, this sweet, crispy on the edges and soft fluffy on the inside, is well loved and relished by all.

Ingredients :

  • Raw rice – 250 gms
  • Grated coconut – 1 & 1/2 cups
  • Poha ( beaten rice ) – 1 cup ( heaped )
  • Jaggery powder – 1 cup ( heaped )
  • Ripe bananas – 2
  • Cardamom powder – 1 tsp
  • Salt – 1/2 tsp
  • Ghee for frying

Method :

  1. Wash and soak rice in water for 2-3 hours.
  2. Soak the poha 10 minutes before grinding.
  3. Grind grated coconut, bananas and jaggery to a smooth paste.
  4. Now add the rice and grind coarsely, add washed poha and salt, grind again .
  5. Add cardamom powder and enough water to make the batter into a pouring consistency like an idli batter.
  6. Keep this batter to rest for 30 minutes to 1 hour.
  7. Beat the batter well. Heat the appe pan (aebleskiver pan) and smear it with ghee. Fill the cavities with batter. Smear little ghee again and close the lid. cook it on a low flame.
  1. Open the lid and turn it, cook it till well done on both sides.
