
Whenever taste buds go bland I make batate song to revive them. Song is a dish which sounds like English but derived from amchi word ‘sang’ ( chillies). This dish has mild sweetness of onions, spicy and tangy too. The same masala can be used to make song from mushroom, cauliflower, ladies finger etc.
Ingredients:
1. Potatoes – 5 medium sized
2. Onions – 6 to 7 medium sized
3. Red chillies – 7 bedgi + 7 ordinary chillies
4. Grated coconut – 2 tablespoons
5. Tamarind – one gooseberry sized
6. Oil – 2 tablespoons
7. Musterseeds – 1 teaspoon
8. Curry leaves – one sprig
Salt to taste


Methord:
1. Wash and cut potatoes into half .
2. Pressure cook potatoes with enough water for 2 – 3 whistles .
3. When pressure releases take it out from pressure cooker and keep aside to cool down .
4. Peel the potatoes, roughly mash the potatoes with your hands in a bowl and keep aside .

5. Peel and cut onions into cubes .
6. Roast both the red chillies with little oil .
7. Grind the grated coconut, fried red chillies and tamarind into a fine paste using enough water .
8. Wash the blender with one cup of water and keep this water aside. Use this water to cook onions .
9. Heat oil in a kadai and add musterseeds,when it starts to splutter add curry leaves,fry for a while and add onions .
10. Add salt to onions, to fasten it’s cooking and saute the onions. Fry it till they are translucent .
11. Once the onions are translucent add ground masala with water and bring to boil .
12. Now add mashed potato and mix it well. Check and adjust salt .
13. Add water if required to cook the onions and bring together all the ingredients. Do not add excess water as we need a semi dried gravy in the end .
14. Cook on low flame for 8 – 10 minutes .
15. Serve hot with rice and dal.
