Mahalaya Amavasya Special

Mahalaya Amavasya also called ” Pitra Moksha Amavasya is a Hindu tradition dedicated to the pitra or ancestors . It is observed on the amavasya ( new moon day ) of the Bhadrapada  month . Mahalaya Amavasya is the last day of the 15 day long shrada rituals . This day is considered to be most auspicious as the shradha ritual of any deceased person can be performed on this day irrespective of the tithi . A time to express our thanks to our ancestors by preparing and offering specially prepared food . On this day devotees remember their ancestors  and pay homage to them and offer food , cloth and sweets to the Brahmins. The belief of offering food the dead ancestors is said to free their souls from the circle of life , so that they can  attaire salvation . The food offering made for the ancestors are cooked at home and offer typically on plantain leaf .  I have grown up seeing my elders doing all these rituals very religiously every year .
