Kuruku Kalan

This is Kerala’s “Onam Sadya” Curry

Ingredients :

Nendra kai ( banana/ plantain ) -1

Malabar Yam -150 gms.

Curd – 1 cup.

Black Pepper -1 tsp (crush coarsely ).

Fenugreek seeds – 1/2 tsp (dry roast and powder )

Turmeric powder -1/4 tsp.

salt to taste.

Grind together :

Coconut -1/2.

Green chillies -2-3.

Cumin seeds -Pinch.

For Seasoning :

Coconut oil -1 tbsp.

Mustard seeds -1/2 tsp.

Curry leaves – few

Dry Red chilli -1 (optional ).

Method :

  1. Peel and cut banana into 1/2 inches round pieces,and yam into cubes.
  2. Cook yam in enough water with crushed pepper, when the yam is half cooked add banana pieces with turmeric powder and cook till soft.
  3. Grind coconut , green chillies and cumin seeds into fine paste.
  4. Add salt, ground paste and cook  for a few more minutes.
  5. Add the fenugreek powder and curd just before removing from fire.
  6. Fry seasoning in coconut oil and add to the gravy.
