Thazhuthama (Hog weed ,Boerhavia diffusa ) Thoran

 

Thazhuthama is a annual herb. In Ayurveda Thazhuthama is know for its anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. Traditionally it is used for the treatment of various hepatic (liver) disorders.

Ingredients :

  • Thazhutham leaves, chopped – 4 cups.
  • Thor dal –  1 tbsp
  • Grated coconut – 2 tbsp.
  • Shallots -15 – 20.
  • Red chillies – 5 – 8.
  • Mustard seeds – 1 tsp.
  • Turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp.
  • Oil – 1 tsp.
  • Salt to taste.

Method :

  • Crush red chilies in a mortar pestle.
  • Peel and crush shallots .
  • Cook dal in enough water, don’t use pressure cooker.
  • Heat oil in pan add mustard when it starts to crackle add shallots.
  • Stir for a minute and then add crushed chilies,turmeric powder and chopped leaves.
  • Stir it well and cook for a minute.
  • Now add the grated coconut, cooked dal and salt.
  • Stir again well  cover it and cook for a few more minutes.
  • There is no need to add water while cooking.
  • Open the lid in between and stir well.
  • Serve with rice.
